What Should I Know During National Diabetes Awareness Month?
Diabetes is a disease which is growing in the United States. More than 29 million Americans have been diagnosed with either Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes, making it one of the most prevalent diseases in our country.
What do you know about diabetes? How can you raise awareness about preventing and managing this disease? Keep reading to find out.
Diabetes can be diagnosed as one of two types: Type 1, which is classified by the body’s inability to produce enough insulin, and Type 2, which is classified as the body’s rejection of the insulin created by the pancreas.
While Type 1 diabetes often can’t be prevented, there are some things you can do to prevent Type 2 diabetes, which include:
Eat healthy. Make sure to include lots of fresh fruits and vegetables in your day-to-day diet.
Watch your weight. Weight gain is one of the biggest causes of Type 2 diabetes, so watch the scale.
Stay active. Make sure to exercise for at least 30 minutes a day; walking, jogging, playing frisbee, and swimming are all great low-impact options.
Managing Your Diabetes
If you’ve already been diagnosed with diabetes, then don’t worry, with a little management and directed action you can live a long, happy, and healthy life.
Here are some things you can do:
Floss. Gum disease can make it harder to manage your diabetes, and practicing good oral hygiene (brushing and flossing every day) can help prevent gum disease.
Check your feet. If you begin experiencing issues with poor blood circulation, then your feet are the first places which will start showing warning signs. Check your feet every day and get used to what they look like so you can spot any changes.
Get some rest. If you’re over-tired, your body doesn’t work as efficiently, and it can be easier to skip a workout or make unhealthy food choices.
Find Sources of Support
Having diabetes can feel like a scary and daunting diagnosis, but you aren’t alone; 9.3% of Americans have either Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes, and there are lots of support groups in most cities for people to come together and share their stories and successes.
Support systems can have significant positive psychological benefits.
Additionally, they can help individuals with diabetes take a more proactive approach to managing their lifestyle and making healthier choices.
