Why We Love Ductless Heat Pumps for Your Marin County Home

Heat pumps have exploded in popularity across Marin County over the last five years, and it’s easy to see why. More and more homeowners want to go all-electric, generous rebates have made the switch attractive, and people have fallen in love with the comfort, efficiency, and flexibility that heat pumps bring to a home.

At Bellows, we install every kind of heat pump system—but if you ask our team what we get genuinely excited about, the answer is ductless. Ductless systems have been popular in Europe and Asia for decades, and today Marin homeowners are discovering what the rest of the world already knew: ductless is one of the smartest ways to achieve the ultimate in home heating and cooling.

Here are the three things we love most about going ductless.

1. No Ducts Means Cleaner Air and Better Efficiency

It’s right there in the name—ductless—but the fact that these systems have no ductwork is a huge win for efficiency, airflow, and cleanliness.

We can’t tell you how often we open up a home’s ductwork and find it torn up, disconnected, or invaded by rodents. Dust infiltration, debris, and worse all get blown right into your living space every time the furnace or AC kicks on. Even without rodent intrusion, old ducts quietly collect dust, dried skin cells, and allergens for years. When that air circulates, it circulates through all of it.

A properly maintained ductless system skips that problem entirely. There’s no hidden duct run for contaminants to hide in, which makes ductless one of the cleanest ways to heat or cool a room. For anyone with allergies or a focus on indoor air quality, that difference is significant.

2. True Zoning You Can Actually Feel

We still install plenty of ducted zone systems, and they work well in the right home. But many homes present real challenges when you try to zone ductwork—duct limitations, awkward room layouts, uneven airflow, or a hard-running system that short-cycles and wears itself out.

For the best zoning capability, nothing matches ductless. You quite literally heat and cool only the rooms you’re using. Even better, you can set different temperatures in different rooms. Prefer a cool bedroom upstairs while keeping the downstairs a touch warmer? With a ductless multi-zone system, that’s simple. With a traditional ducted system, it’s often impossible.

3. A Configuration for Every Home

Ductless isn’t one-size-fits-all. The indoor units come in a wide range of styles: wall-mounted units (available in various colors, shapes, and sizes), recessed ceiling cassettes that mount nearly flush, floor-mounted units, and even combination ducted/ductless setups. There are hundreds of configurations, which means we can design a system to match your home’s unique layout, aesthetic, and budget.

A Real Marin Install: Ductless in a Lucas Valley Eichler

We recently added ductless units to an Eichler home in Lucas Valley, and it’s a perfect example of why we love these systems. Eichlers—with their open designs and minimal attic space—are ideal candidates for ductless, but the truth is nearly any home can benefit.

The results speak for themselves. The units look clean and intentional against the home’s architecture, each room heats and cools exactly the way it should, energy use is down, and operation is so quiet you barely know they’re running.

Honestly? If we were rebuilding our own homes today, it would take a lot to talk us out of going ductless.
