What Are Microplastics, and Why Is Everyone Suddenly Talking About Them?

Here’s the honest answer for most Bay Area homes. Municipal water in California is treated to a high standard, and your utility does real work to deliver safe water. But treatment happens at the plant — not at your tap. Between the plant and your glass, water travels through miles of mains, service lines, and your own home’s plumbing. Older pipes, main breaks, and long travel distances all introduce contaminants that were never in the treated supply. That’s the gap a point-of-use drinking water system is designed to close.
Why Reverse Osmosis Is the Right Tool for the Job
Reverse osmosis works differently than a pitcher filter or a screw-on faucet filter. Instead of catching particles in a mesh, RO pushes water under pressure through a semi-permeable membrane with openings so small that dissolved solids, metals, and particulate matter simply can’t follow the water through.

It requires the system to demonstrate reduction of the smallest particle size range in the standard — and it has to hold that performance under stress: when the filter is brand new, when it’s heavily loaded, and when flow is cycled on and off after sitting idle. It’s not a lab-bench best-case number. It’s a durability test.
Certified Microplastics Reduction
This is the newer claim, and it’s built directly on the Class 1 result. When the standards bodies went looking for a way to verify microplastics performance, they concluded that the Class 1 nominal particulate reduction test — because of the particle sizes it covers and how rigorous the protocol is — was an appropriate measure of a system’s ability to reduce plastic particles. Systems that meet it can carry a certified microplastics reduction claim under NSF/ANSI 401.
Translation: this isn’t a marketing badge somebody designed in-house. It’s third-party verification, tested to a published standard, for a contaminant homeowners are actively worried about.
Very few drinking water systems carry both claims. The ERO-385 now does — with no change in price.
Who Should Consider One?
