What’s a Heat Pump?

Heat pumps are often confused with air conditioner as they have a lot of similarities. In layman’s terms a heat pump is an advanced air conditioner that can move refrigerant in both directions providing both cooling and heating to the home. In the trades, the word heat pump is used more to describe a process of heating or cooling the space. A heat pump system “pumps” heat energy, via the refrigerant, from inside of the house to the outside, thereby cooling the house, or “pumps” heat from the outside area in to the house, thereby heating the house.

A heat pump system looks a lot like the traditional forced air gas furnace with air conditioner. The outdoor unit often looks identical to its AC only counterpart. However ,as mentioned above the outdoor unit  can change modes and is paired with an indoor air handler. The indoor air handler is the fan and coil combination that distributes air throughout the home. It’s a lot like a furnace, but lacks the gas valve.
