If you’re a San Jose homeowner thinking about switching to a heat pump — or replacing an aging furnace and air conditioning system — you’ve probably already discovered that the choices are overwhelming. Dozens of brands, hundreds of models, confusing efficiency ratings, and every contractor claiming to be the best. So how do you actually choose?

At Bellows Plumbing, Heating, Cooling & Electric, we’ve installed and serviced HVAC systems throughout Santa Clara County for years. We work on every major brand, but there are four heat pump systems we trust most — systems we’ve put through the real-world test of Bay Area climates, diverse housing stock, and the demands of San Jose homeowners who expect their equipment to run quietly, efficiently, and reliably for 15 years or more.

This guide is your honest, experience-backed breakdown of those four systems — plus the factor that most contractors won’t talk about: why the installation matters just as much as the equipment.

Why San Jose Is Ideal for Heat Pump Technology

San Jose sits in the heart of Silicon Valley with a mild Mediterranean climate that is practically designed for heat pump efficiency. Winters rarely drop below 35°F, summers stay manageable, and the Bay Area’s push toward electrification makes the switch from gas to an all-electric heat pump more financially and environmentally compelling than almost anywhere else in the country.

California’s Title 24 energy requirements, ongoing PG&E gas rate increases, and the City of San Jose’s clean energy commitments all point in the same direction: heat pumps are the right call for most San Jose homes replacing aging equipment today. The question isn’t really if you should make the switch. The question is which system is right for your home, your budget, and your long-term comfort goals.

What’s Happening With Rebates and Incentives Right Now

Before we get into the systems, let’s be honest about where things stand with incentives in 2026 — because there’s a lot of outdated information circulating online.

The federal 25C tax credit is gone. It expired December 31, 2025, and is no longer available for systems installed in 2026 or later. If you installed before that date, you can still claim it on your 2025 tax return — but for new installations today, it is not an option.

California’s HEEHRA rebates are currently waitlisted. The statewide single-family program fully reserved its funding in February 2026 and is no longer accepting new applications. Waitlist spots exist, but there are no guarantees on timing or additional funding.

What IS still active and worth asking about:

  • San José Clean Energy (SJCE) EcoHome Rebate — For customers within San José city limits, SJCE offers rebates on qualifying heat pump HVAC systems, plus an interest-free EcoHome Payment Plan with no money down for up to $5,000 over five years. This is one of the best active programs in the area right now. Visit sanjosecleanenergy.org or ask your Bellows consultant for current amounts.
  • Silicon Valley Clean Energy (SVCE) Rebates — If you live in surrounding Santa Clara County cities like Cupertino, Milpitas, Morgan Hill, Gilroy, or Campbell (not served by SJCE), SVCE offers up to $2,000 on qualifying heat pump HVAC installations, with enhanced rebates for income-qualified households.
  • Central Coast Community Energy (3C3) — If you live in Santa Cruz, Monterey, Salinas, and parts of Gilroy / Morgan Hill check out 3CE for great heat pump rebates.
  • PG&E Energy Savings Assistance — Income-eligible homeowners may qualify for no-cost or deeply discounted heat pump upgrades through PG&E’s assistance programs.
  • Manufacturer Rebates — From time to time Mitsubishi, Lennox, and Friedrich run promotional rebate programs through their contractor networks. Ask your Bellows team what’s current at time of installation.

The rebate landscape changes frequently. The Bellows team stays current on all available programs so we can help you capture every dollar you’re entitled to. Always ask us before your installation — not after. Most rebate programs now a days are consumer applied.

The Four Heat Pumps Bellows Stands Behind

We sell and install every major brand. But these are the four systems we stake our reputation on — the ones we know perform year after year when installed correctly.

🥇 Mitsubishi PUZ + PVA Air Handler — The Premium Choice

Best for: Homeowners who want the best money can buy and expect their system to last 20+ years without drama.

The Mitsubishi PUZ outdoor unit paired with the PVA multi-position air handler is the gold standard in ducted residential heat pumps. This is Mitsubishi’s professional-grade P-Series — engineered to tighter tolerances and built for demanding, long-term applications.

The PUZ/PVA achieves up to 21.2 SEER2 and 9.8 HSPF2, with an INVERTER-driven compressor that continuously modulates output to precisely match your home’s comfort needs — rather than cycling on and off like a traditional single-stage unit. The PUZ outdoor unit features Blue Fin and Seacoast protection, rated to 2,000 hours of salt spray testing — critical in the Bay Area where environmental conditions shorten the lifespan of lesser equipment.

The PVA air handler stands out: fiberglass-free insulation for cleaner indoor air quality, a positive pressure cabinet with less than 1% air leakage, and selectable external static pressure settings that adapt to virtually any existing duct system. Optional electric heat kits (3kW–23kW) are available for backup heating.

The PUZ system maintains full heating capacity down to -4°F — far below anything San Jose sees — which means it never strains or struggles during cold snaps. It simply delivers steady, even comfort regardless of outdoor conditions.

Efficiency varies by size: 15.4 to 22 SEER2 and 8.8 to 9.4 HSPF2 depending on tonnage, and the system is ENERGY STAR® certified.

Mitsubishi backs its equipment with an industry-leading warranty, and when installed by a certified contractor like Bellows, that coverage is even stronger.

The Bellows verdict: If budget is not the primary constraint and you want the finest ducted heat pump system available — the one that will still be running flawlessly 20 years from now — this is your system.

🥈 Mitsubishi SUZ + SVZ Air Handler — The Smart Value Mitsubishi

Best for: San Jose homeowners who want proven Mitsubishi reliability and INVERTER technology at a more accessible price point.

The SUZ/SVZ pairing delivers everything Mitsubishi is known for — INVERTER-driven precision, quiet operation, all-electric heating and cooling — at a price that works for a broader range of homeowners.

The SVZ air handler is just 39 inches tall, making it ideal for installations where a traditional full-sized air handler simply won’t fit. This is a common challenge in older San Jose homes, garage mechanical spaces, and closet installations. The system ties directly into your existing ductwork, so in most cases no new duct construction is required.

Efficiency numbers remain strong: up to 21 SEER2 and 10.7 HSPF2 at 1.5 ton. Mitsubishi’s Hot-Start Technology ensures the fan only activates after the heat exchanger is warm — so residents never feel a burst of cold air when the system first cycles on. That small detail makes a noticeable day-to-day difference in comfort.

The SUZ-KA HZ hyperheat variants maintain capacity all the way down through freezing temperatures, with excellent retention at even the most extreme Bay Area conditions. Available in 1 through 3-ton sizes, the SUZ/SVZ covers the vast majority of San Jose single-family homes and condominiums.

The Bellows verdict: The smart pick for Mitsubishi buyers who prioritize long-term reliability and efficiency without the P-Series price tag. A system that will serve a San Jose home beautifully for 15+ years when installed with care.

🥉 Lennox EL18KSLV + CBK43 Air Handler — The Space-Saver Cold Climate Star

Best for: San Jose homes with tight outdoor installation spaces, homeowners who want ENERGY STAR Cold Climate certification, and anyone who values smart home integration alongside serious performance.

The Lennox Elite EL18KSLV is one of the most distinctive heat pumps on the market — and its standout feature is the side-discharge design. Air discharges from the side rather than the top, enabling installation in zero-lot-line properties, narrow side yards, and confined mechanical wells where a standard unit would be impossible or code-violating. For a city like San Jose, where many homes sit on tight lots, this matters far more than most homeowners realize until they get into an installation.

Performance doesn’t take a back seat to the compact form. The EL18KSLV is ENERGY STAR® Cold Climate certified, achieving up to 19.0 SEER2 and 10.0 HSPF2 through a variable-capacity inverter compressor with 65 speeds of modulation. Sound levels run as low as 54 dBA — exceptionally quiet for a unit of this class, and genuinely appreciated in dense San Jose neighborhoods where outdoor units are close to property lines or bedroom windows.

The system uses R-454B refrigerant — a low-GWP formulation that meets California’s environmental requirements and future-proofs the installation against further regulatory tightening. Available in 2, 3, and 4/5-ton configurations.

Paired with the CBK43 air handler and the Lennox E40 Smart Wi-Fi Thermostat, the system integrates with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Matter smart home platforms — a natural fit for Silicon Valley homeowners who want full connectivity alongside efficiency. The Lennox Smart Tech App even allows our installers to commission and monitor the system remotely during startup and service.

Lennox’s Warranty Your Way™ program gives homeowners a genuine choice: 10-year parts-only coverage, or 3 years of labor plus 7 years of parts — flexibility that’s unusual in the industry.

The Bellows verdict: The best option for tight installation environments, and a genuinely excellent performer for any San Jose home. If your mechanical space or lot challenges have made contractors hesitate in the past, the EL18KSLV is likely your answer.

Heat Pump Installer San Jose Best Company

💰 Friedrich Breeze — The Value Champion

Best for: San Jose homeowners who want to escape gas and step into modern inverter heat pump comfort without the premium price tag.

“Value” in this context does not mean “compromise.” The Friedrich Breeze is a fully capable inverter-driven universal ducted heat pump rated at up to 18 SEER2 and 9.5 HSPF2, with a heating range all the way down to -22°F and cooling capability up to 129°F. Those are numbers that would have been considered premium-tier just a few years ago.

What makes the Friedrich Breeze particularly practical for San Jose is its universal compatibility — it works with virtually any existing forced-air furnace or air handler, making it the easiest retrofit option for homeowners who want to electrify without a full system replacement. If your existing air handler is in good shape, the Breeze can pair with it and deliver all-electric, inverter-driven heating and cooling starting on day one.

Friedrich Soft-Start™ technology reduces the electrical strain on the compressor at startup, extending service life and being gentler on your home’s electrical panel — a meaningful benefit in older San Jose homes that may not have been updated for the demands of modern equipment.

The outdoor unit operates at as low as 38 dBA, one of the quietest ratings in the value segment. Friedrich backs the system with industry-best warranty support and a dedicated contractor technical support network that makes service calls straightforward when needed.

The Bellows verdict: If your goal is to stop burning gas, reduce your monthly utility costs, and step into the comfort of inverter-driven heat pump technology — the Friedrich Breeze delivers everything you need at a price that makes the decision easy.

The Factor Most Contractors Won’t Talk About

Here’s the honest truth the equipment brochures will never tell you: a poor installation of a premium system will underperform a quality installation of a mid-range system, every single time.

We’ve been called in to diagnose and correct installations by other companies more times than we can count. The unit started up. The homeowner was satisfied for 18 months. Then comfort complaints started. Then efficiency problems. Then early mechanical failures. Not because the equipment was bad — because the installation was done quickly and without care.

At Bellows, a furnace-to-heat pump conversion that another company might complete in one day typically takes us two to three days. That’s not inefficiency. That’s craftsmanship. Our process includes:

  • A proper Manual J load calculation to size the system correctly for your specific home — not a guess, not a rule-of-thumb
  • Careful duct evaluation and modification where needed for the heat pump’s airflow requirements
  • Correct refrigerant line sizing and proper insulation throughout
  • All electrical work meeting San Jose and Santa Clara County code requirements
  • Full system commissioning and performance verification before we close out the job
  • A walkthrough with you so you understand how to operate your new system and what to expect

Any company can get a heat pump to power on. Not every company installs a system that runs at its engineered efficiency, maintains consistent comfort through every room, and operates trouble-free for 15 years or more. That difference is what you’re getting with Bellows — and it’s why our customers don’t call us back with problems.
