Is Your San Jose Air Conditioner Ready for Summer? 7 Warning Signs You Need AC Service Now

Summer in San Jose hits fast. One week it’s 68°F and comfortable — the next you’re hitting 95°F and reaching for the thermostat. If your air conditioner has been sitting idle since last fall, you may be one hot afternoon away from finding out it doesn’t work anymore.

At Bellows Plumbing, Heating, Cooling & Electric, we’ve been serving Santa Clara County homeowners since 1984. Every summer, we get a surge of emergency calls from San Jose residents whose AC systems failed right when they needed them most. Most of those breakdowns were preventable.

Here are seven warning signs your AC needs attention — before the heat wave hits.

1. Your AC Is Blowing Warm or Lukewarm Air

This is the most obvious sign something’s wrong. If your system is running but the air coming out of your vents isn’t cold, you could be dealing with low refrigerant, a failing compressor, or a dirty condenser coil. None of these fix themselves — and all of them get worse with time.

What to do: Call for a diagnostic before temperatures peak. A technician can identify whether you need a repair or if it’s time to consider a replacement.

2. Weak Airflow Through Your Vents

If some rooms feel cool while others feel stuffy, or the air pressure from your vents seems weaker than usual, you may have a clogged air filter, a failing blower motor, or duct issues. San Jose’s dusty spring season is notorious for loading up filters fast.

What to do: Check your filter first (replace if it’s been over 90 days). If airflow is still weak after a new filter, schedule a tune-up.

3. Your Energy Bills Are Climbing for No Clear Reason

Have your PG&E or Silicon Valley Clean Energy bills been creeping up even though your usage habits haven’t changed? A dirty or inefficient AC system has to work harder to maintain your temperature set point — and you pay for every extra hour it runs.

What to do: A professional AC tune-up can restore efficiency and often pays for itself in energy savings within a single season.

4. Your System Is Making Unusual Noises

Rattling, banging, squealing, or grinding sounds are never normal. These often indicate a loose component, worn belt, failing motor bearing, or debris in the unit. Left alone, a minor noise can become a major repair — or a full system failure.

What to do: Turn off the unit and call a technician. Operating a system that’s making unusual sounds can accelerate the damage.

5. Frequent Cycling On and Off (Short Cycling)

Does your AC seem to turn on, run for a minute or two, then shut off — only to start again shortly after? This “short cycling” is often caused by an oversized system, low refrigerant, or a failing compressor. It dramatically shortens the lifespan of your equipment and keeps your home from ever reaching a comfortable temperature.

What to do: This one needs a pro. Short cycling can have several root causes and requires a proper diagnostic.

6. Your System Is More Than 12–15 Years Old

The average lifespan of an air conditioner in the Bay Area is 12–18 years with proper maintenance — often less without it. If your system is approaching or past that range, running it through another San Jose summer is a gamble.

Modern systems like the Lennox SL25KCV (up to 26 SEER2) use significantly less electricity than systems installed even 10 years ago. Homeowners in Santa Clara, San Mateo, and Santa Cruz County may also qualify for rebates on qualifying heat pump installations — making this the right time to upgrade.

What to do: Ask for a free comfort consultation to compare the cost of continued repairs vs. a high-efficiency replacement.

7. You Haven’t Had a Tune-Up in Over a Year

Even if your system seems fine, skipping annual maintenance is how small issues become expensive ones. A professional tune-up includes cleaning coils, checking refrigerant levels, inspecting electrical connections, lubricating moving parts, and testing overall performance — everything needed to start the season right.

What to do: Schedule your summer AC tune-up now, before the wait times extend into weeks.

What Does a Professional AC Tune-Up Include?

When a Bellows technician comes to your San Jose home, here’s what they check:

  • Inspect and clean condenser and evaporator coils
  • Check refrigerant levels and test for leaks
  • Inspect and tighten electrical connections
  • Test thermostat calibration and operation
  • Lubricate motors and moving components
  • Inspect and clear condensate drain line
  • Check blower operation and airflow
  • Replace or inspect air filter
  • Test system cycling and overall performance

San Jose Homeowners: Rebates Are Available Right Now

If your AC or heat pump is aging, you may not have to pay full price for a replacement. PG&E and Silicon Valley Clean Energy, Peninsula Clean Energy, and Central Coast Community Energy customers can access rebate programs through TECH Clean California on qualifying high-efficiency heat pumps and AC systems. Bellows can walk you through the process at your in-home consultation — we handle the paperwork so you don’t have to.
